Nouns have gender and can be either masculine or feminine. The definite article 'the' and indefinite article 'a' differ depending on the gender of the noun, and whether the noun is in the singular or plural.
Definite article (singular nouns)
The word for 'the' is ' el ' for a masculine noun and ' la ' for a feminine noun.
Indefinite article (singular nouns)
The word for 'a' is ' un ' for a masculine noun and ' una ' for a feminine noun.
