How to learn Catalan

Learning any language is easier at the start than attempting to master or reach a high standard. It is also at the initial stages especially rewarding, because when beginning you can make rapid progress without worrying about grammar or trying to learn infrquently occuring words.

Learning a language is personal, and can vary from knowing ten words to fluency depending on your goals. Are you trying to learn enough to scratch a linguistic itch? Do you want to learn enough to be polite, to get by, make small talk or to be able to communicate with ease and flair?

Easy Catalan is aimed at anyone who wants to start learning the Catalan language or just wants to learn a few useful words and phrases before their next visit. There are also links to other resources which might be helpful.

One way to use Easy Catalan is to pick key or useful words and phrases that you want to learn. When, you visit another holiday, whether for pleasure or on business, only learn the words that you are likely to use. If you are a vegetarian, learn phrases like I don't eat meat.

The roadmaps are split into basics, get by phrases phrases and essential grammar.

These are just ideas to start with but you may prefer to pick what you need from lessons, vocabulary and grammar sections. Not everyone, for example, will consider colours or days of the week as essential when learning their first words, and might prefer to focus on conversational language. Everyone is different, and each approach is equally valid.

These key words and phrases will vary from visitor to visitor depending on the purpose of their trip. A businessman, for example, is likely to have different language requirements to the tourist, and when only learning a small part of language may choose to concentrate on a few formal situations.

Or, if you have friends who speak another language, you might learn a few expressions that you can use in specific situations with them. In either case, you are starting to learn the language and if you continue to learn it, then the vocabulary you have learnt will be a great help.
