The Catalan language
Catalan is spoken by around ten million people in the north-east of Spain, and is the language of the autonomous region of Catalunya.
It is a romance language, meaning that it originated from Latin, as did Spanish, French, Italian ...... and so has similarities with these languages. If you are already familiar with another romance language, this will certainly help you learn Catalan as you will find similarities with the grammar and vocabulary (as well as important differences).
Standard Catalan is based on the language as it is spoken in Barcelona.
